CLINICS
Asthma, Diabetes
And Heart Disease
If you have any of these conditions
it is important that we see you at least once a year for a check-up. Please make
an appointment with the practice nurse.
Minor Surgery
And Wart Clinics
Some minor surgical procedures can
be performed at the surgery by one of the doctors. Cryocautery (freezing) clinics
are held for the removal of warts. You will need to see a doctor to confirm the
diagnosis before making an appointment for minor surgery.
Cervical Screening
It is recommended that all women
between the ages of 20 and 64 who have ever been sexually active should have a
cervical smear every three years. This aims to detect any changes in the neck
of the womb which if left untreated may progress to cervical cancer. The test
can be performed by one of the practice nurses. You will be sent a reminder when
your next test is due.
Family Planning
Family planning advice including
emergency contraception is available from our practice nurse or any of the doctors
during normal surgery times.
Maternity
We recommend where possible you discuss
your plans to have a baby with a practice nurse or your doctor before you stop
using contraception. Advice leaflets about planning for a baby are available from
reception. We advise you to take folic acid (400 microgrammes daily) if there
is any chance you might become pregnant. If you suspect you may be pregnant you
can get confirmation by using a home testing kit available from your local pharmacy.
Remember to use an early morning sample of urine for the most reliable result.
Make an appointment with your doctor to arrange further care. It will help to
bring a mid-stream sample of your urine whenever you attend for a check during
pregnancy.
Child Health
Our health visitor Liz Gardner runs
a child health clinic on Thursday mornings at the practice. A nursery nurse, practice
nurse and GP are all available to help promote your child’s health and welfare.
New baby checks, immunisation and development checks are all provided. Please
make an appointment if possible.
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure increases your
risk of heart attack and stroke. We recommend that everyone over the age of 16
has their blood pressure checked at least once every five years. The health care
assistant offers a well person check including blood pressure by appointment.
If you have a family history of blood pressure, heart attack or stroke you may
need a cholesterol and blood sugar test as well.
Foreign Travel
If you are going abroad and require
immunisation please make an appointment to see our practice nurse at least eight
weeks prior to your departure.
Phlebotomy Services
We have fully trained staff who take
blood samples by appointment every morning.
Healthy Lifestyle
The practice is committed to encouraging
healthy living and all our practice nurses are fully trained to offer advice on
diet and lifestyle.
Elderly
Screening
If you are aged 75 or
over you will be offered a health check. This will be carried out annually by
a member of the nursing team.
Health
Promotion
We are committed to
reducing the number of patients suffering from heart disease and strokes. It is
important therefore that we detect those most at risk. One way of doing this is
to record blood pressure, height , weight, alcohol and tobacco habits and family
history. All patients who have not been seen by a doctor or nurse for three years
or more are asked to make an appointment to see the health care assistant for
a check up.
Influenza
Vaccinations
In accordance with guidelines
from the Department of Health, we recommend an influenza vaccination for patients
aged 65 and over and those with chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes,
asthma or any other chronic illness. Please ask for details of clinics etc during
October.
Counselling
If you wish to have
an appointment with the counsellor you will need to discuss this with your doctor
first.
Doctors
Dr de Vries and Dr Naughton-Doe
are full time partners in the practice. Dr McAlpin does seven surgeries per week.
The doctors maintain personal lists to help ensure continuity of care. Please
try to book your appointment with your usual doctor. In case of difficulty obtaining
an appointment you may request that your doctor contacts you by telephone to discuss
your request. In an emergency you may be seen by any of the doctors.
Practice
Nurses
We have three practice
nurses and a health care assistant able to deal with many problems including minor
illnesses and injuries. The nurses may be seen by making an appointment. They
provide a full range of services and their clinics include diabetes, coronary
heart disease, asthma, blood pressure, the taking of blood, well woman, cervical
screening, contraception, healthy living, travel advice and vaccinations, elderly
screening and health checks.
The nurses are available to offer help and advice and will refer you to the doctor
should it be necessary.
District

Our district nursing
team provide care for people at home who are unable to attend the surgery. Most
of their work is with the elderly, chronically sick and terminally ill. They may
be contacted directly at Orchard Park Health Centre on 01482 857191.
Health

Our health visitors
are specially trained to provide advice on child care and family health issues.
If you have any worries about the growth or development of your children then
you may wish to contact them first. They will liaise with the doctors as appropriate.

advice provided on feeding, baby massage etc. You may contact the health visitor
